Cleaned and ready to shoot my first roll. It is solid and heavy and since i paid only 5 american dollars in thrift shop, i feel this additon to my display cabinet will at least be a conversation piece. I am 71 and have not seen a meter on front of a camera since about 1958 when i obtained Kodak 8mmm wind-up movie camera. Its weekest link was short run time cause the spring wound down very quickly. I guess that is why all my old hime movies have short snipets and do not look like a real movie that has continuous running camera.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8781482943379174553.post-22645948048575289542013-10-19T12:20:29.695-07:002013-10-19T12:20:29.695-07:00I have great condition Argus C4R. Like you, I didn't think much of Argus since they were so ubiquitously ugly, but last night I saw a mint C4R in a Sally Allie and it looked so sexy I had to have it. Everything works!

Right now it's sitting next to a Bell & Howell Foton which was an expensive marketing flop of the late 40's. The Foton was introduced to an American Public that was coming out of a long period of non-consumerism extending from the depression to rationing during the war. Some thought there was pent-up demand for a technologically advanced but very expensive rangefinder like the Foton ($700). However, after spending a reported $1 million on development sales are thought to be as little as 500 units sold.

Some people think that B & H priced the Foton too high, but both it and the C4R share an aluminum body with sleek modern styling with the Argus C4R at a much lower price point. Both cameras failed to gain a foothold in a photographic marketplace that was exploding. This leads to some interesting questions as to why these two cameras at different price points failed to sell. I feel that the Foton's innovative thunder was stolen by the introduction of the Polaroid which promised instant pictoral gratification for those who could afford it. The Argus may have suffered a similar fate a few years later when the marketplace was more sophisticated and looking for more than glitz.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8781482943379174553.post-2769881626750868792011-12-18T01:39:42.890-08:002011-12-18T01:39:42.890-08:00I can fix this camera - if you wish, as I have res...I can fix this camera - if you wish, as I have restored some of mine to near new condition. ;) I also have a large collection of Argus cameras, and one Argus C4R...

You can reach me at untetheredphotography@gmail.com, and my name is Brian... I have a few Arguses (Argi?) here and have found most of them to be cumbersome to use. But they all have at least decent lenses capable of taking good photos -- if you're patient with the box itself.Jim Greyhttp://blog.jimgrey.netnoreply@blogger.com
